416 Weekend: Things to do in Toronto (Nov. 29th – Dec. 1st)

CavalcadeI think it’s safe to say it’s officially the beginning of holiday season, especially after this week’s snow fall. Given that we Canadians seem to have adopted the tradition of Black Friday, Christmas shopping frenzy is about to begin, too. There is plenty of holiday spirit around this weekend with Christmas markets, tree lighting and other events that are guaranteed to get you humming Christmas carols. I’ve got my TOP5 for you so get out there and have fun this weekend!

Cavalcade of Lights – The 47th annual Cavalcade of Lights officially kicks off the holiday season in Toronto with performances by some of Canada’s top musical talent, a brilliant fireworks show, a skating party at Nathan Phillips Square, and of course the lighting of Toronto’s official Christmas tree. This event is a great excuse to kick-off the holidays with the younger members of the family on Saturday evening.

Toronto Christmas MarketToronto Christmas Market – One of the most stunningly picturesque marketplaces brings in a bit of the Old World charm to the city. The European-inspired marketplace at the Distillery Historic District starts Friday and runs through December 15th. Hardy comfort food, sweets, spiced-wine, as well as all kinds of merry holiday entertainment and cheer will be up for the taking in. Even Santa and his helpers, will be at attendance for the little ones.

The One of a Kind Christmas Show – One of the most anticipated Christmas shopping shows of the year features unique products for everyone. The show takes place at the Direct Energy Centre until December 8th and gathers the work of approximately 800 artisans for your browsing pleasure. Shop for hand-crafted ceramics, jewellery, furniture, clothing and accessories, browse through art galleries, watch a fashion show and take part in artistic holiday activities. Since its first show in 1975, it has become the largest consumer craft show in North America.

OnceOnce at Royal Alexandra Theatre – It started with a movie by John Carney, last year, it became Broadway’s newest smash musical hit, and now it’s making its Toronto debut. Once, featuring the songs of Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, comes to Mirvish’s Royal Alexandra Theatre after winning eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and a Grammy. Once is the story of Dublin street musician Guy, who finds inspiration when he meets a young Czech woman who plays piano. Songs include the Academy Award-winner Falling Slowly, This is the first weekend of performances and I guarantee you’ll fall in love with it.
